Jonelle’s case was widely publicized. Ronald Reagan, who was the president of the United States at the time, mentioned Jonelle in a speech on March 7, 1985. He appealed to the media, asking them to create awareness of Jonelle’s case and pleaded with journalists to print out photos of any missing children and circulate them.

On September 13, 2019, former governor of Idaho candidate Steve Pankey was announced by the Greeley police department as a person of interest in Jonelle’s case. According to the indictment, investigators claimed Steve abducted Jonelle from her home sometime between 8:30 and 9:30 pm. At some point during the kidnapping, he shot her in the head and buried her.The police arrived at the Matthews’ home at around 10:15 pm. They noticed there were footprints in the snow very near to the Matthews’ home, suggesting someone had been keeping an eye on the house.Afterwards, Jonelle’s friend DeeAnn Ross and her father drove Jonelle home. Jonelle got home at around 8:15 pm. At 8:30 pm, she answered a phone call and wrote down a message for her father.Jonelle’s birth mother Terri Vierra-Martinez was only thirteen when she gave birth to her. After a month of being a new mother, Terri realized she was not capable of the responsibility due to her young age and placed Jonelle up for adoption.Ten years after her disappearance, Jonelle’s parents declared her legally dead. Soon after, Terri sent a letter to Jim and Gloria asking if she could meet with Jonelle. The Matthews informed Terri what had happened and over time, the two families became friends and mourned for Jonelle together.
As Apple continues to expand its sales with the release of the Apple Watch Series 6, luxury watch brands need to innovate their products in other ways besides tech to capture the attention of younger, affluent customers. Younger consumers may appreciate Apple’s focus on health, but there are other things younger consumers care about too.

1) Religions map to highly differentiated belief clusters and mentalities that have little to do with their theologies, 2) Heresies are separatist movements, often ethnic, and have little to do with religious doctrine.

Nostalgia can also be a very powerful marketing driver for customers too. Millennials and Gen-X are obsessed with 80s culture from music to TV shows like Netflix’s Stranger Things. Fads from the 90s are coming back too as roller skates and fanny packs surge in sales. Nostalgia might benefit luxury watches too.
They set their sights on Jonelle’s birth mother Terri. They tracked Terri for weeks before realizing she had no idea her biological daughter had gone missing. Next, the investigators interviewed all of Jonelle’s friends, teachers and neighbours but once again, they found nothing out of the ordinary.

The need to express individuality is strong among Millennials and Gen-Z. Custom bands for smartwatches have seen growing sales in the past few years as consumers seek to differentiate themselves from others. As their incomes grow, Millennials and Gen-Z may look towards luxury watch brands to upgrade towards. These traditional brands may have seen a decline in sales in recent years, but they have not seen a decline in their reputations as premium watch brands.

Investigators theorized Jonelle had ran away but Jim never believed that story, especially since she had left without shoes and there was heavy snow on the ground at the time of her disappearance. Investigators stuck to this theory until they searched her school locker to look for any clues she may have been planning to run away. When they found nothing, they finally took the case as a serious abduction.

Luxury watch brands have a tough future ahead of them. As Apple grows its smartwatch business, the market expands with more new watch consumers that luxury brands can market towards. Brands like Omega, Rolex, and Breitling need to tweak their products to be more reflective of modern consumers’ needs, especially Millennials and Gen-Z while keeping the nostalgic features that make their watches special and timeless.

On July 23, 2019, thirty-five years after Jonelle was abducted, excavators were installing a new pipeline in a remote oil and gas site in Weld County when they found Jonelle’s remains. The investigators confirmed her identity through DNA. An autopsy was released and Jonelle’s death was caused due to a single gunshot wound to her head.
